Protocol handlers are a new feature in Firefox 3.1 that allows links like mailto:nobody@mozilla.org to be handled by a webmail application.

In order to do that, the site needs to support a special API described on http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Web-based_protocol_handlers.

For en-US, we're currently shipping with GMail and Yahoo! Mail for mailto: and 30boxes for webcal: urls, and we're on a ongoing evangelism effort to add more. ms live mail are coming up shortly. For Mongolian, we currently ship with Yahoo! Mail only, and so we'd like to see if we can add other providers, too. Would GMail be a suitable choice?

First, the localization team and Stas (Stas Malolepszy) will look at the market for the language and come up with a good candidates. Nagi, we'll need your input on this, the guidelines for making recommendations are on http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_web_services_guidelines. Following that is a reach out by the evangelism team to try to get the vendor to support protocol handlers.

Once that happens, Stas will take over in reviewing the actual implementation, which will need to change the gecko.handlerService.* entries in mn/browser/chrome/browser-region/region.properties. Please don't make changes to that file without getting a positive review by Stas or somebody else appointed by Stas/Sethb on a patch for that change upfront.
Hi Nagi,
Have you had a chance to research what Web mail, Web cal, and Web IRC clients might be helpful or useful for mn users of Firefox? If there are web services that you recommend, we can add them to this default list of protocol handlers for your localization. Please let us know what you think is best. Hope to hear from you soon and please do let us know if you have any questions.

Ping? Nagi, any progress on this bug? We are waiting for your recommendations as the local expert for the Mongolian Web. What are the best protocol handlers to include in the Mongolian version of Firefox 3.5? Looking forward to your response.
I saw some mn activity today wrt product localization. Nagi, any progress on this bug?
Three popular web mail in mongolia are: Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail.
AFAIK very few people use webcal, so we can use default webcal as en-US.
Last time I checked, Hotmail didn't work correctly, but there's a bug on file for this: bug 444399. I didn't have time to follow up there recently, but I think there are good chances we'll take it in in one of the updates following the 3.5 release.

For now, let's go with the en-US defaults: Gmail and Yahoo as mailto, 30boxes and webcal and Mibbit as irc protocol handlers. Can you please create a patch and attach it to this bug for review? You'll need to edit browser/chrome/browser-region/region.properties and increment gecko.handlerService.defaultHandlersVersion to 2 and add Gmail and Mibbit, similar to what we have in en-US: <http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla-1.9.1/file/31a6c9d58956/browser/locales/en-US/chrome/browser-region/region.properties>.

Please do not commit any changes to the hg repository with a review. Thanks.

Thought I would try to help out Nagi here by providing a patch for review. Nagi, please excuse my patch. Don't want to interrupt your work. Simply trying to help out AND learn advance my limited patch writing abilities. Hope you don't mind :)

Also, I have no idea if this is correct, so it might very well get an "r-" from Stas.

Noticed an error I made by adding Yahoo! Mail to the mailto: protocol handler section when it already existed.

updated mn region.properties patch

This looks great, thanks Seth!

r=me. Nagi, please land this patch on branch (1.9.1) and trunk (l10n-central) using a descriptive check-in comment, mentioning the bug number and my review (e.g. "Bug 477990: Firefox protocol handler setup, p=sethb, r=stas").

Please use fixed1.9.1 and verified1.9.1 keywords in this bug to track landing and verification on the 1.9.1 branch.

Nagi, since we're really close to freezing translations for RC1, please land this patch asap. If for some reason you can't, just let us know in this bug and we will land it for you.
