Seems the setting "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" doesn't work at all. Even if I leave it unchecked, new tab still gets focus when I open a link in it.
Btw, "browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground" setting in "about:config" works. I think check/uncheck "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" should change the value of "browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground", right?

Reproducible: Always
This works for me as expected. Maybe there is a conflict with an add-on? Please try to reproduce the problem in safe mode ( http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode ) with the add-ons disabled.
browser.tabs.loadInBackground
Thanks for quick replies.
I tried the safe mode, but still the setting "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" doesn't work.
Thanks to Ria, I noticed this setting is browser.tabs.loadInBackground entry in about:config.

But I still think the 2 entries: 1. browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground 2. browser.tabs.loadInBackground , there are conflicts between them. And according to my testing, the first entry overrides the second one.
loadDivertedInBackground does exactly what the pref says. You want bug 263553 fixed.
