Escape doesn't stop server querying. Should be able to in case you have server that is down or you decide not to 'get mail'.  Probably more important if you don't want to contact newsgroups.
Escape seems to work once connected, but doesn't respond in 'looking up...' or 'connecting to...'

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.change server name to invalidate it.
2.try downloading mail or if nntp click on to newsgroup
3.while connecting hit escape.

Actual Results:  
nothing happens have to wait for timeout.

Expected Results:  
stop connecting or looking up server.

this is more of a UI problem.  Kind of buggy looking to hit escape and not be able to cancel an operation.

I don't seem to see the same problem anymore.  I'll get this off my books unless I run into problems.

Maybe this is not a bug but is intentional though I wouldn't know why. If you hit escape when downloading a message it should stop just like in firefox hitting escape cancels any page loading, escape should cancel message download or imap checking.
