What version of thunderbird are you using ? Can you follow the instructions on https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging and create the smtp log file for us and attach it to the bug. And if his does not make any sense tell us will explain more.

This also happens to me with a new account. I can receive but sending always gets Mail Server Error 5.1.1 Auth required to send as resx9lqe@verizon.net. The account is nickimom@verizon.net. I tied latest Mozilla 3.x nightly build and it did the same thing. Outlook express works ok. The Mozilla bug happens on three different PC's! Somehow Thunderbird is using garbage ( always the same based on the real account email ) to send the email address to the SMTP server. My work around is to send as an old account havener@verizon.net but set the reply to: nickimom@verizon.net.

Have you checked the SMTP (which is the outgoing server) settings for the account/identity in question?

<resx9lqe@verizon.net>
You need to configure your smtp server to use a user/password - the same ones that you use to read emails. Did you setup a user password for your smtp server ?
Component: General → Networking: SMTP
Product: Thunderbird → MailNews Core
QA Contact: general → networking.smtp
Version: unspecified → 1.9.1 Branch

Yes of course I set up the SMTP server to use a password. I have been doing IT for 30 years. Make a new user account yourself. It uses the same SMTP out bound server as any old accounts you have. But you won't be able to send mail with the new account. The server is set up inbound to use nickimom and has a password for nickimom. I can read mail sent to nickimom. But I can't send mailfrom Thunderbird as nickimom because Thunderbird says it is not nickimom doing the sending but resx9lqe. So it is a Thunderbird bug!

Which username (email) is used for authenticating the sending is defined in the smtp server settings, please check those again. And if you have several smtp servers set up, make sure it's using the one you want.

"550 5.7.1" is frequently followed by "Relaying denied" or "Relaying prohibited", and is rejection by SMTP server based on spam policy. See Bug 228198 and next document.
> http://kb.mozillazine.org/5.7.1_Unable_to_relay
It looks that login is done with username for resx9lqe@verizon.net. Does verizon permit mail send with "From: <nickimom@verizon.net>" using username for resx9lqe@verizon.net?
(Gmail's SMTP silently replaces From: header by mail address assigned to username used in login in this case, unless user registers it at Gmail Web...)

Who said so is SMTP server of Verizon. Never Thunderbird.
