After I upgraded from 0.2 to the code tip, my sources stopped showing up in the collections view. Their messages show up in the All Messages collection, so they haven't disappeared, but the sources themselves aren't in the list. Most people also don't show up in the list, although a few of them (about 20, with a couple duplicates) do show up.
i'm guessing this means they weren't converted to Places. they are not lost from messages.sqlite, just not showing up. to diagnose this, we need to turn on file logging (console isn't big enough), close Fx, remove places.sqlite and all .json files from /bookmarkbackups, and restart. we should also determine if the messages.sqlite db has integrity, ie no author records without a source, or messages without a source. as we've discussed, in earlier versions it was possible to delete a source without all of its other parts. perhaps a quick manual inspection via something like SQLite Manager extension would show something amiss.
I checked in some code that reenables logging to a file, deleted places.sqlite and the bookmarkbackups/ files, and restarted, but this time the Places population worked, according to the log, and all sources and people have showed up in the collections view. Is there another way we might be able to troubleshoot this problem and figure out why it occurred? Or can we make the code itself detect when Places is out of sync with the set of sources and people in the Snowl database? Note: another issue was that the Places population horked the UI thread for a number of seconds. I have filed bug 480673 on that issue.
closing, as places build code has been beefed up quite a bit since this older version. please reopen if anything recurs.
