481726 - Create mozilla.community.india newsgroup for India Site Evangelism Issues

After the recent trip to India that sethb and I took, we'd like to have an "uber" listserv for India related issues, including:

1. Site blockages.  These are separate evangelism issues, including font standards and

2. Security issues and spreadfirefox discussions

3. Events specific to India.

This will be in addition to https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/dev-l10n-in which is about Indic language localization (and we may also take some of the subscribers of this list as well).

It should be called community-india .

Any reason why mozilla.dev.l10n.in doesn't fit this? Maybe we need mozilla.dev.general.in, too, or something.

Hi Reed:

Actually,mozilla.dev.l10n.in is good for localizing Mozilla, propagating stuff like Silme (Python localization technology) etc.  I don't want to hotrod that discussion list for general discussions about Firefox propagation in India (unblocking banks, egovernance sites, railway bookings, the Telegu newspaper online, etc.) and for SpreadFirefox events that occur in India that are beyond the campus reps listserv.

I also agree that maybe mozilla.dev.general.in is good, but not sure whether that's _exactly_ what I want here :-)  Are you against something like mozilla.community.india?  It could give rise to mozilla.community.brasil, etc.

It's really Gerv's call in the end as to what he wants. I'm just offering my comments based on existing newsgroups I see.

We currently used two-letter codes for languages; using them for countries too is going to cause confusion. I think mozilla.community.india is probably the right way to go, particularly if discussion might be in a variety of languages, and a lot of the topics will be non-software-development.

Since we depend on both Google and Giganews to set stuff up for newsgroups, there's no real ETA I can give you... it varies.

I will :)  So can we at least set up the mailing list at lists.mozilla.org, before the Google/Giganews NNTP goodness kicks in?

Note: a lists.mozilla.org mailing list (which doubles as a newsgroup) is what I had in mind, with the mailing list being the more important component :)

Has the mailing list been setup?  I realize there's a larger google groups issue but the mailing list could be setup now, right?

This mailing list is set up and in use; nothing needs to be done here.  This bug doesn't need to be open.  Matthew, are you thinking of Bug 481715 ?  On that bug, there is an open renaming issue.
