[kk] Firefox protocol handler setup for Kazakh
Protocol handlers are a new feature in Firefox 3.5 that allows links like mailto:email@example.com to be handled by a webmail application. In order to do that, the site needs to support a special API described on http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Web-based_protocol_handlers. For en-US, we're currently shipping with GMail and Yahoo! Mail for mailto: and 30boxes for webcal: urls, and we're on a ongoing evangelism effort to add more. We're going to add support for irc links to mibbit.com soon. For Kazakh, we'd like to do that, too. First, the localization team and Stas (Stas Malolepszy) will look at the market for the language and come up with a good candidates. Timur, we'll need your input on this, the guidelines for making recommendations are on http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_web_services_guidelines. Following that is a reach out by the evangelism team to try to get the vendor to support protocol handlers. Once that happens, Stas will take over in reviewing the actual implementation, which will need to change the gecko.handlerService.* entries in kk/browser/chrome/browser-region/region.properties. Please don't make changes to that file without getting a positive review by Stas or somebody else appointed by Stas/Sethb on a patch for that change upfront.
Hi Timur: Any progress here? We'd love to see your recommendations on good candidates for protocol handlers for Kazakh. http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_web_services_guidelines provides more information. If you intend to have Kazakh participate in the FF 3.5 beta 4, we'll need to have these handlers set up. Hope you can help here and please let us know if you have any questions. Thanks so much!
Hello Timur: We're getting close to the code freeze for Firefox 3.5 beta 4. Just another gentle reminder that we would like to reach a decision on this protocol handler bug. Do you know if there are any other web mail, web calendar, or web IRC services that Kazakh users might prefer? Just let us know. :)
Since Kazakhstan, unfortunaetely, has pure developed Internet infrastructure I think it would be better to copy protocol handlers from Russian Firefox. Maybe, the situation will change in time for the upcoming Firefox release, but I am not sure about this.
The ru protocol handlers can be found here: http://mxr.mozilla.org/l10n-mozilla1.9.1/source/ru/browser/chrome/browser-region/region.properties For web-based RSS readers, the list includes 1. Яндекс.Лента 2. Kanban 3. Bloglines 4. My Yahoo 5. Google Reader For mailto:, they have listed 1. Яндекс.Почта 2. Mail.Ru 3. Gmail For webcal:, they have listed 1. Яндекс.Календарь Does this look good to you? Please confirm and we'll include them in the kk version.
Yes, all of them are quite popular in Kazakhstan, except for calendar, maybe. I have a question: can we change them if something more relevant for Kazakhstan appears?
Shall we go with the following choices for mailto: 1. Яндекс.Почта 2. Mail.Ru 3. Gmail and 30boxes (the en-US default) for webcal? 30boxes doesn't offer any localization, AFAIK, so maybe including Яндекс.Календарь would still be a good choice? Regarding your question: it is possible to change this list later on, so if you hear about something relevant, please file a new bug or ping me in IRC. Keep in mind thought that while adding new handlers is trivial, changing or removing existing ones a bit more tricky.
Timur, what do you think about my comment above? (comment 6).
Hi Timur, any remarks regarding Staś's comment #6? We would love to get your response so we can finish this bug for the upcoming release of Firefox 3.5. Closing this bug is critical for us to move you out of beta and into "official" status. Hoping to hear from you soon.

Hey Timur, It's been quite a while since the last comment in this bug. However, it looks like we're actually pretty close to marking it as fixed. Would you like to help us with that? There's only a handful of bugs left that block Kazakh from moving out of beta (the dependencies of bug 483285). Plus, the translation is 100% complete! It would be great if we could move forward on the Kazakh localization. Please let us know how we can help. Thanks, -stas
Looking at http://www.internetworldstats.com/asia/kz.htm, it seems that the internet got much more popular in Kazakhstan in the last 2 years, has that had an impact on the ecosystem of web services there? If not, we might be close to just wrap this bug up.

Timur, can we get forward with this?
Protocol handlers for kk locale. Basically I have copied them from Russian locale, so i do not think it would be unsafe to commit these to aurora and beta channels.
