RSS readers are web services allowing users to subscribe to RSS feeds online and view them. If Firefox detects a feed, it offers the user to subscribe to it, either as a live bookmark or via one of the web services.

The current RSS Readers in en-US are Bloglines, My Yahoo, Google.

We want to ship a good set of defaults for Kazakh, and will work towards that in three stages.

First, the localization team and Stas (Stas Malolepszy) will look at the market for the language and come up with a good candidates. Timur, we'll need your input on this, the guidelines for making recommendations are on http://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox_web_services_guidelines. After we decided on a particular RSS reader, Stas will contact the owner and ask for permission. undefined, we'll likely need your help to at least get the contact information.

Once we have a specification on what the set of RSS readers for Kazakh should look like, the localization team and Stas will work on an implementation on that. This should happen by the localization team creating and attaching patches for the desired changes, and requesting review from Stas. After a successful review, the localization team will land them. If you're not feeling comfortable with creating those changes, ask Stas to help out.

Please don't commit any modifications in l10n/kk/browser/chrome/browser-region/region.properties to the cvs repository without a patch reviewed by Stas, Axel or someone else appointed by Stas/SethB. The data here is sensitive to users and our search partners, thus the extra care here.
Is this covered in the bug 483291?
No, bug 483291 covers protocol handlers, such as mailto, webcal and irc. This bug is about content handlers, i.e. feed readers.

So the list of feed readers in [ru] that Seth pasted in bug 483291 comment 4 actually belongs in this bug here :)

http://mxr.mozilla.org/l10n-mozilla1.9.1/source/ru/browser/chrome/browser-region/region.properties

For web-based RSS readers, the list includes
1.  Яндекс.Лента
2.  Kanban
3.  Bloglines
4.  My Yahoo
5.  Google Reader

How does this list look like to you, Timur?
Timur, any response here? We should try to resolve the above RSS reader applications to include with the Kazakh version of Firefox before we release Firefox 3.5. Please advise and thank you for all the help.

Hey Timur,

It's been quite a while since the last comment in this bug. However, it looks like we're actually pretty close to marking it as fixed. Would you like to help us with that?

There's only a handful of bugs left that block Kazakh from moving out of beta (the dependencies of bug 483285). Plus, the translation is 100% complete! It would be great if we could move forward on the Kazakh localization. Please let us know how we can help.

Thanks,
-stas
The current state in the source is that bloglines got already removed.

As it's been a while, and internet in Kazakhstan changed a good deal, are there new services that we should have on our plate here?

Otherwise, can we wrap this up?

Hello Timur,

As Axel said in previous comment, Internet in Kazakhstan has probably changed a lot since 2009, so it would be nice if we can think about this one a bit.

Do you have any suggestions to what RSS readers are popular in Kazakh language?
While it is true there is some progress in development of Internet in Kazakhstan since 2009, unfortunately, no such site in Kazakh is currently present. So my suggestion is to copy these strings from Russian Firefox and close the bug.
Timur,

Fair enough. Can you please proceed with creating a patch for that? If you don't feel comfortable with doing that on your own, I can help.

Find URL to Russian region.properties file below:
http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/l10n/mozilla-aurora/ru/file/6f76c6db69ed/browser/chrome/browser-region/region.properties

After we get a patch, attach it here, and flag me for a review. Once you get a positive review, you can push the patches.
Hi, Milos, this is the patch we were speaking of this morning.

Asking for a review and for check-in to beta since this is IMHO a low-impact change.

You removed Bing from Search engines, and that's out of the scope of this bug. Please attach patch for this separately in search engines bug.

Hmm, this doesn't look that nice, sorry. So, basically, I don't see anything wrong with a patch, but I see other productization changes in this one, too, and they should go in separate bugs already filed for that.

Can you please recreate this?

Ah wrong flag. "approval‑comm‑beta" is for Thunderbird/SeaMonkey/Lightning.

Philip,

Sorry for the lag. This somehow wen off of my radar.

Anyhow,

What I wanted to say with my previous comment is that the previous patch, as well as yours, has some modifications to search engines, which hasn't anything to do with this bug.

Timur, Philip,

Mind adding another patch for review?
Attached patch RSS readers for kk locale (obsolete) — Splinter Review
RSS reader setup for kk locale. Basically I have copied them from Russian locale, so i do not think it would be unsafe to commit these to aurora and beta channels.

It seems that the list of readers has actually been discussed on irc or somewhere between comment 8 and comment 9? Can we document what we're actually implementing in a comment here?
I do not remember any such discussions.
With еры patch I add Яндекс.Подписки (Yandex.Subscriptions) and Kanban to the list of RSS readers while omitting Yahoo RSS reader.
Axel,

per comment 7 in this bug, Timur wants to copy over protocol handlers from Russian.

Timur,

Here's a c/p from current Russian region.properties file:

browser.contentHandlers.types.0.title = Яндекс.Подписки

browser.contentHandlers.types.0.uri = http://mail.yandex.ru/lenta/add?feed_url=%s
browser.contentHandlers.types.1.title = Kanban

browser.contentHandlers.types.1.uri = http://www.kanban.ru/my/settings/add.asp?feed=%s

browser.contentHandlers.types.2.title = Google Reader

browser.contentHandlers.types.2.uri = http://fusion.google.com/add?feedurl=%s
browser.contentHandlers.types.3.title = My Yahoo

browser.contentHandlers.types.3.uri = http://add.my.yahoo.com/rss?url=%s

Which is not exactly what you're going to get by applying attached patch. You will remove the My Yahoo! totally, for instance.

Was that intentional, or do you think My Yahoo as a feed reader is for some reason not suitable for Kazakh users?
>Was that intentional, or do you think My Yahoo as a feed reader is for some reason >not suitable for Kazakh users?

I think My Yahoo as a feed reader is not suitable for Kazakh users because it does not have Russian interface and chances for it to add a Kazakh one are negligible. This is why I have removed it.

Please note, that currently http://www.kanban.ru redirects to http://www.rss2email.ru
Perhaps you should update url and name of this service.

Oops, I've meant that http://www.kanban.ru/my/settings/add.asp?feed=%s redirects to http://www.rss2email.ru/?rss=s
Alexander, do you know why that is? Also, should we adjust the russian setup for that?
(In reply to Axel Hecht [:Pike] from comment #21)
> Alexander, do you know why that is?
No.

> Also, should we adjust the russian setup for that?
I guess I should. Looks like redirects still work and functionality is not broken, as http://www.kanban.ru/my/settings/add.asp?feed=http://lenta.ru/rss/ redirects to http://www.rss2email.ru/?rss=http://lenta.ru/rss/ so it's mostly cosmetic issue.
I'll file a bug for ru locale and attach a patch.

/me grumbles about lack of automatic tests for this kind of stuff.

Milos, what about landing this on beta?
Timur,

yes, please do land on beta, with same commit message, and paste links to revisions here.

Thanks!
Timur, ping here as well.
Awesome,

Thanks folks!
