User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.7) Gecko/2009021910 Firefox/3.0.7
Build Identifier: Mozilla Thundrbird version 2.0.0.21 (20090302)
Thunderbird currently receives email from three email accounts with the default account set to a verizon account. Sporadically instead of sending e-mail from the default account, Thunderbird will send e-mail from a gmail.com account instead of the default account. I discover this when I look for sent email in the verizon account sent folder and find it in the gmail account sent folder. Things become incredibly complex when folks reply to the gmail account instead of the verizon account. How do I stop it from happening?
Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Send email
2.Check verizon sent folder. If there proceed to next e-mail
3.If not there check gmail sent folder. If there, send e-mail and go to step 2.
Expected Results:
Eventually (by repeating steps 1,2, 3) email that should have been sent on verizon is sent on verizon. So far the sporadic reassignment of email accounts has not recurred the second time I have tried to send on verizon.
My guess is that somewhere in the thunderbird program there is a reference to gmail as opposed to the default account. Or perhaps it happens when checking gmail in the background or something of that ilk.

Are you using more than one smtp servers? The gmail smtp?
gmail changes the sender at least if the from address isn't registered at gmail
as an identity.
Thank you Magnus Melin.
After further testing, I now believe that I succeeded in setting Thunderbird to only send through the verizon account. It appears that Thunderbird is sporadically identifying my e-mail as having been sent from the gmail address even though it is being sent over the verizon account. As I check with recipients of my e-mail, they virtually all appear to have received my e-mail. So my thinking is that verizon is allowing the e-mail through and my major problem is that Thunderbird is storing sent e-mail in the wrong folders. However, I would prefer Thunderbird to use my default settings.

I have just installed the latest version of Thunderbird which was an effort as the updates always seem to have problems on this computer. Because of installation problems, I had to totally uninstall Thunderbird and remove the profile folder and rebuild the email accounts by copying the folders into the new profile.
I am replicating this problem if I reply to an old email the predates the new installation. If I hit the reply for email received after the installation, the problem does not replicate.

Al, I believe I had something similar. I forget which bug#. But I don't experience with the v3 betas. If you can try the beta I'd be interested to know whether you see the problem.

Backup your profile before using
Note v3 sets all folders for offline use
please update the bug if you test v3

(Bug summary)
> Thunderbird sporadically sends e-mail from wrong account.
Thunderbird sends mail based on mail address set in From: field(identity).
If you doesn't set proper or appropriate SMTP server(or Use Default Server), Tb sends mail using different SMTP from your thought, according to you setting.
If you don't change From: address when preset From: is different from your expectation, Tb sends mail based on mail address(identity) set in From:.
In both cases, Tb sends mail according to your setting or request.
Read next document for concept around SMTP settings and identity settings.

Local mail folder(POP3, "Local Folders")? Or IMAP folder?
If local mail folder, you are perhaps experiencing Bug 327713.
If account number is different between old profile and new profile, preset From: upon reply becomes different one from your expectation, because account number in X-Account-Key: header in mail data(set upon mail download) is used for preset From: determination.
View mail source, and check data in X-Account-Key: header, and compare it with account definition in prefs.js.
I submitted this comment. Thank you to everyone who took the time to analyze the situation and reply.
My solution to the problem turned out to be less logical. I had been using a 64 bit HP Pavilion. That machine crashed with a fatal electrical malfunction. I am now using a Toshiba 32 bit machine. The problem does not occur on the Toshiba.

There is no need to keep this bug open any moe. So closing as INCOMPLETE(I guess INVALID though).
To bug opener, please re-open, if it'll be found that your problem was caused by Tb's flaw in program code.
