In normal text fields, one can press the Option key on a Mac and then press any other input key on the keyboard to insert a symbol or an accented character. (Accented characters are done using combining diacritics.)

For example:
Option+E,A gives á
but
Option+E,space gives ´

The Skywriter project has merged with Ajax.org's Ace project (the full server part of which is their Cloud9 IDE project). Background on the change is here:
