Right now, you cannot upload a multi-item packages without specifying a version number. According to the mdc docs, a version number is not required.
Why would you want to omit the version? It makes sense to have them versioned to tell different versions apart.

XPInstall may not require it but I think AMO probably should so it will be able to handle updating sanely. WONTFIX?
