I've had, lately, a series of crashes in Fox, as wells as in Fox-SafeMode.

Much of the time, there is no rhyme or reason. Sometimes I have the sense that it is connected to Javascript, or video or other imagery that shows on NYTIMES.COM or CNN.COM [connected with flash?], and sometimes I suspect that scrolling my middle mouse button will do it. Sometimes I wonder, for no particular reason, if it is the Sprint wireless networking software. Other times, I suspect changing tabs or scrolling -while- a page is loading; other times, I am doing nothing and that particular suspicion is misplaced.

I've been tempted to suspect windows, or hardware faults, but this only occurs with Fox. I've tried, with an "art" approach to solving the problem rather than an engineer's knowledge, to avoid crashes by using SQLite to compact Fox's databases; sometimes I have the sense that that works, but sometimes, it doesn't. Generally, I have multiple tabs open on crashes, but this is the consequence of my usage; I've had crashes with just one tab open, or my local, static, homepage filled with a short list of usable URL's. Sometimes, I notice that the crash occurs 5-10 seconds after I restart Fox, with or without restoring tabs. Usually, restarting windows might "fix" things. Although sometimes, the crashes just stop [which makes me think a database issue, for some reason]. Note....This crash behavior is limited to Fox [though once in a rare while Thunderbird catches the same bug-iness]. Sometimes the crashes stop, until a new Fox update appears, and then I fall into a pattern, again -- 3.08 and .07 both seemed to have the problem more than the next earlier version [though I would not swear this..]

I've attached a recent list of crashes/reports [noting that a goodly fraction of the crashes bypass reports, and go straight to "disappearing" the Fox window.] My apologies -- I know that somewhere along this more recent list I share below, I installed the 3.08 version. The list, below, is from "About:Crashes"; the list there goes back towards July, '08; I've shared a portion since aruond February

I have the most updated Java, Flash, Shockwave, Acrobat reader, etc.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Bend Karma the wrong way, on certain days of the week, in mostly alternate weeks, in Months that end with -er or don't.

I wish I knew, actually, as that would be real helpful...

I should add that my laptop usage includes "sleeping" windows when I walk away. I can not say for certain that the propensity for crashing is more likely after sleeping, or after multiple sleeps. Hopefully someone knowledgeable, walking down the reports, might notice something.

While not in safe mode: I have adblock+, tabmix, both probably actively engaged in whatever I am doing. Loaded but not active in what I am doing: down them all, image zoom, adblock element hiding helper, java quick starter, and user agent switcher. I use the default theme.

Sometimes, the post-crash "cure" is restarting Fox, landing on my local home page, waiting a few seconds, and then voluntarily closing Fox, and then restarting to a happy-world...

These crashes are in many different locations :/

John, are you still getting lots of crashes after updating to Firefox 3.5?

Can you experiment to figure out if one of your extensions is making Firefox crashy? e.g. disable them all, then enable one every few days.
I do know that the crashes continue, but seem to have evolved into a pattern that seems to generate failures -- these things seem to be associated with the failures

Rolling the mouse wheel while a page is loading. Downloading a page with flash content. Viewing a tab while another tab has flash content. Rolling a mousewheel while a page is flushing out, and changing the layout. Having a page with the NYTimes in another tab which, by the way, reloads every few minutes]; Yahoo, RawStory. Java; JavaScript pages.

I've said this before, in a prior iteration of bugs.... I often wonder if there is a conflict with timing, unforeseen, but arising because I have a slightly older laptop, and load multiple tabs, with contents that are distributed between plain old html, and such that the pages with content need help [like flash, or shockwave, or whatever] and additional processing. I am CPU intensive, with mult applications going, and with multiple tabs.

How would one go about detecting those sort of timing issues, that lead to crashes?

I also wonder if the constantly growing memory usage problem persists, and if that has something to do with it.

Now, at least, I notice that the crashes far more often than not generate a Mozilla report. Though, now I can't tell you which reports were mine....
You can use about:crashes to see your own crash reports. I'm curious what your new ones look like. You can paste another list here, or use
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11217 or
http://konigsberg.mozilla.org/crash-stats.html to figure out what different crashes you are seeing.

You can use Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) to see how much memory Firefox is using. If it's using more than 1GB of memory, you could be experiencing out-of-memory crashes.
See Bug 547230 and Bug 546859
Also, update your flash to 10.0 r45 or later, make sure java, quicktime, adobe, etc. are all up to date (visit the developer's websites to get the latest), and make sure firefox is updated to 3.6
I do those updates, and am conscious of the security patches for the various helper apps.

In an unrelated reported crash, I discovered that my original and old webcam DLLs caused immediate crashes with the 10,,,r45 flash when I accessed the webcam for the first time in years. Updating the camera's drivers cured that crash, and I was actually hopeful that the update would solve all this scroll stuff; after a few days == crash [including, Tyler, the ones you've seen lately], and hopes dashed.
Reporter, please retest with Firefox 3.6.12 or later in a fresh profile (http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles). Also update your plugins (flash, adobe reader, java, quicktime, silverlight, etc.) Go to the developer's website and download the latest version from there. If you no longer see this issue, please close this bug as RESOLVED, WORKSFORME. If you do see the bug, please post a comment.
Whiteboard: [CLOSEME 2010-12-01]
I remain convinced that there are timing issues with Fox that lead to crashes on older laptops. However, since that laptop is no longer used, replaced by a newer one, substantially faster one, I report no similar issues anymore.

Still....how would someone divine out the potential for timing issues, with so many threads and resources used....

Thanks.
