User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); sv-SE; rv:1.9.1b3) Gecko/20090305 Firefox/3.1b3 GTB3
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); sv-SE; rv:1.9.1b3) Gecko/20090305 Firefox/3.1b3 GTB3
After upgrade from Ubuntu Intrepid to the Jaunty beta, I can no longer use SCIM to import CJK glyphs into a Gmail text box when running Firefox 3.1 b3. However, SCIM and Gmail work very well together when running Firefox 3.0.8 on Jaunty. The same phenomenon is observed with text boxes in, e g, this bug formula ; i e, I cannot use SCIM to enter CJK glyphs here.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot to Ubuntu Jaunty
2. Load Firefox 3.1 b3
3. Open Gmail account
4. Click «Write mail» to open a message form
5. Place insertion point in text box
6. Click SCIM button on Gnome panel
7. Attempt to select, e g, «Japanese - Anthy» from drop-down menu
Actual Results:
«Japanese - Anthy» is not selected, and when I type text on my 105-key Scandinavian keyboard, no choice of Japanese glyphs to enter into the text box is presented. Instead, the Latin letters I type are entered directly into the text box.
Expected Results:
«Japanese - Anthy» is selected, and when I type text on my 105-key Scandinavian keyboard, I am offered a choice of Japanese glyphs to enter into the text box.
I am using the Firefox default theme.

I should also note that SCIM works fine in text editors like the gedit text editor (v 2.26.0) for Gnome or various OOo versions (3.0.x, 3.x.x) or, indeed, when sending a Gmail message using the «Epost» option provided in Picasa 3.1.0 (v 70.8101,0), i e, with a programme that does not employ the browser.

Yes, indeed ! Running Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); sv-SE; rv:1.9.1) Gecko/20090624 Firefox/3.5 GTB5, I see precisely the same phenomenon described above - my attempts to select, say, «Japanese - Anthy» fail and the SCIM icon remains unchanged (keyboard icon for Latin text) when the Gmail compose box is open. However, if I open my gedit text editor, «Anthy» is selected, and I can input Japanese text into the text editor, which I can then copy into the Gmail compose box, should I so choose. Moreover, the SCIM icon changes to the «Anthy» three-pointed crown and the «Anthy» bar is shown. But if I now attempt once again to input Japanese test directly into the Gmail compose box, I fail (i e, I get Latin letters), even though the «Anthy» icon remains on the screen (but not the «Anthy» bar) - indeed, clicking it does not allow me to restore it to the default keyboard icon for Latin text. What is perhaps odder still is that I do not encounter this problem when running the latest Swiftweasel 3.5 version (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; sv-SE; rv:1.9.1pre) Gecko/20090602 Firefox/3.5pre GTB5) ; there SCIM works just hunky-dory !...

This problem persists with Firefox 3.5.1 (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); sv-SE; rv:1.9.1.1) Gecko/20090715 Firefox/3.5.1 GTB5) on 64-bit Ubuntu Jaunty, but is resolved in the updated Ubuntu ppa version of 3.5.2pre (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3pre) Gecko/20090730 Ubuntu/9.04 (jaunty) Shiretoko/3.5.2 GTB5). The problem may seem trivial, but to those who are dependent on SCIM for inputting glyphs in various languages used by literally thousands of millions of people around the world, it is not, as evinced by this Ubuntu forum thread (http://preview.tinyurl.com/mktcld ). Since SCIM does work with 3.5.2pre, I'm very much hoping that the bug will be quashed in the version of FF 3.5.2 scheduled for release on 3 August....

Turn up again like a bad penny ! I've just updated from Firefox 3.6b2 to 3.6b3 (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-US; rv:1.9.2b3) Gecko/20091115 Firefox/3.6b3 GTB6) and find that the problem I was having with SCIM 1.4.9-1ubuntu2 persists, i e, the only alternatives I see when I click on the SCIM icon in the upper panel of my 64-bit Ubuntu Karmic box are «Latin text» and «Western», which not surprisingly are the same thing. I am thus unable to use SCIM to enter CJK or Russian text. The odd thing is that I don't experience this problem on my Minefield 3.7a1pre ; given my experience with earlier versions of Firefox betas (see above), it would seem that incompatibility with SCIM on Ubuntu boxes is a speciality of these builds. Hope the developers will move quickly to resolve this problem !...

It's been more than a year since this bug was filed, and it seems to have been resolved long ago ; I can report that on the latest FF build - Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; sv-SE; rv:1.9.2.15pre) Gecko/20110130 Ubuntu/10.10 (maverick) Namoroka/3.6.15pre GTB7.1 - SCIM works as it should. I suggest that we retire this bug....
