From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; m18) Gecko/20000811 BuildID: 2000081108 My system does not have the Adobe Acrobat plugin properly installed on it. I recently deleted my Windows directory, and re-installed Win98SE cleanly. I then Installed Netscape, and also Mozilla. I have *not* installed the Adobe Acrobat software or plug-in. (Though the files are still on my HD somewhere) When I try to open a PDF file in Mozilla, I get an error message from the Acrobat Plug-in saying that it cannot launch Acrobat. I click OK, but the error dialog is still there, and I can't use that Mozilla window anymore. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Go to http://graphics.theonion.com/pics_3627/infograph_3627.pdf 2.Click OK 3. Actual Results: The Dialog remained after clicking OK, also preventing that Mozilla window from doing anything else. Expected Results: Clicking OK dismisses the error, allowing me to resume using Mozilla. With Netscape, the first error message is the exact same as Mozilla. After I click OK, it then pops up a second, different error message from Netscape saying that the Plug-in could not be loaded. When I click OK on that second error message, I can continue to use Netscape. Mozilla does not have that second error message at all.

Marking Future. An edge case and I think it will be difficult/impossible to reproduce this situation.

this is easy to reproduce. copy the acrobat plugin to your plugins directory, use regmon to find out what registry entries it looks at. delete or (nt) make those entries unreadable. restart mozilla. I've had this problem in nc4, it's really annoying, but imo it's adobe's fault. [it crashes netscape4] This is really easy to do :-) NT: run regedt32 [as admin], browse to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe get permissions for that key. pick a victim account, and add it to the permissions list, set it to deny access. <ok> run mozilla. The result is a horribly confused (but not crashed) mozilla content window as soon as you try to open a pdf (i chose one of acrobat's help files). ways to escape: * go back * use a bookmark * create a new window * select a url from the url drop down things that are broken until you escape: * urlbar edit field * search>search the web * view>translate * Debug>*, QA>* * Help>Release Notes, Help>About Plug-ins * File>{Save As, ..., Print} View>(Z) has appeared and other strange features wrt that menu :-) I can demo this for anyone if they're interested. This was reproduced using a cvs build from this weekend.

Marking this bug as INVALID. There are many ways you can cause mozilla to crash or freeze by mucking with the wrong files or registry entries. Deleting your Windows directory or changing registry keys is just asking for trouble. Use, UNINSTALL instead or simply re-install acrobat again. Be sure the nppdf32.dll is not in your 4.x plugins folder.
