User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; fr; rv:1.9.1b3) Gecko/20090305 Firefox/3.1b3 Build Identifier: AFAIK, while it's possible to attach tags for received emails, it's not possible to send emails with attached tags! The window for composing emails do not propose to attach tags with emails that users want to send! Reproducible: Always Emails could have associated header fields: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email#Header_fields Some header fields are more standard than the others: see http://www.iana.org/assignments/message-headers/perm-headers.html The "Keywords" email's header field looks like quite interesting, because it may enable to attach tags to an email following a standard attachment, before sending that email. So, using one or another standard header field, users may able to receive and send emails with attached tags (following a standard attachment). I see multiple advantages: (1) it would help for classifying emails, and following conversations. (2) it could inspire people for ideas about email evolution and use cases And more than that, (3) it would provide Thunderbird a differentiated added-value that may attract new users.

This is doable thru http://kb.mozillazine.org/Custom_headers. And yes there is no UI for it. I'm pretty sure this as already been requested.

OK, it's doable. But in order to raise TB at the next upper level, beyond email client, starting to be another kind of collaboration tool, TB should support send/receive tag attachment with 0-cost, almost 0-installation-or-configuration, and easy-to-use UI. This is quite an important opportunity, in order to provide a differentiated feature, and IMHO there is few like that.

While searching an existing bug before posting this enhancement, I have not found any related bug. Sounds being no duplicate, but I am gonna do another search.

It's about starting to add folksonomy - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folksonomy - to Thunderbird. It might open perspectives/use cases. I have just found one, but one may find other ones. use case: - user A: create an email with attached tags, like a tag 'Business Intelligence' - user B: receive this email, but he/she don't know about BI. One TB extension could give the possibility to take tags as arguments and to search on Internet (e.g. Wikipedia), or into a corporate knowledge database.
