Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.21 (20090302)
If you specify in the "edit" > "properties" > "account settings" > "mail" > "server settings" section of the app. that you'd like Thunderbird to check for new messages at startup, the application doesn't seem to abide. If there are messages on the server, you'll hear the alert sound, but it won't download/show the messages. If there aren't any messages on the server, the sound won't play.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to "edit", "properties", "account settings".
2. Under "mail", go to "server settings".
3. Check the box that specifies to check messages at startup.
4. Start the application. Obviously, you'll need new mail on the server in order to test this bug.
Actual Results:
Nothing happens... that's the problem. Only the alert sound plays.
Expected Results:
Downloaded and displayed a list of the messages that are on the server.

POP3? IMAP?
If POP3, what is your choice of following option?
> Automatically download new messages

Do you use localized version of Tb? Check following option.
> Server Settings
> +- Server Settings ------------------------------------------------
> | [X] Check for new messages at startup
> | [ ] Check for new messages at every [ ] minutes
> | [?] Automatically download new messages <== This option
> | [ ] Fetch headers only
> | [ ] Leave messages on server +----------+
> | (snip) | Advanced |
> | [ ] Empty Trash on Exit +----------+
> +------------------------------------------------------------------

Ah. I just tried checking the option you told me to, sending an email to myself. Yes, that "fixed" the "bug". Sorry for thinking it was an error on Thunderbird's part, when it was actually a problem on MY end.
Thanks for the help.

WORKSFORME at bugzilla.mozilla.org is "Tb's flaw in code really existed, and already resolved by unknown patch". It never means "'bug for you' disappeared by some actions in your environment".
Closing as INVALID.
If you think Tb's UI is very confusing / unclear and improvement is needed, re-open and change Severity: to Enhancement, please.
