Tested with latest trunk on Windows XP, Leak Gauge does not report a leak. Possibly the increasing memory usage is caused by a plugin.
Version: unspecified → 3.0 Branch
i tested on second computer (up to date xp sp3) with fresh install of firefox 3.0.10 and zero add-ons. while minimized, the browser memory increases indefinitely.
in analyzing the 2 websites i mentioned, the memoryleak may have to do with a css importing infinite loop being created by both sites. however, latest google chrome and ie7/8 don't seem to have this problem/memoryleak, or at least some protection mechanism
Can you please provide the part that creates the importing loop (in which css file) ?
Summary: memory leak → css importing infinite loop creates steady increasing memory usage

my comments about possibly being css error was based on what is reported by this addon when trying to save the website: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8051 i was simply speculating. hopefully someone with more knowledge can figure out the problem which does happen everytime in firefox but not in ie8 or google chrome.
FireFox 3.5.2: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/07/thirtymetertelescope/ This url would devour memory, FireFox freezes immediately. Second attempt with recovered tabs, same result, though delayed a few moments. Third attempt with fresh session, stable. Event viewer mentioned this, Category (101): Hanging application firefox.exe, version 1.9.1.3497, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000. I have about a dozen add-ons, GreaseMonkey, DownloadStatusBar, ForeCastFox, FireFTP, ChatZilla, Window Resizer, StumbleUpon, Java Quick Starter, Wolfram Alpha Google, Microsoft .net Framework Assistant were active at the time.
dan.gorski@gmail.com: and in which css file is a css import loop at your URL ?
It is the Ad banner up top as Wired is fine when it's not active. Going to http://www.wired.com/gamelife/ the banner came on and crashed FireFox. 2nd time crash, third time FireFox responds that it cannot recover the tabs, the oops this is embarrassing message. The banner space contains the text: "Client Server" While I haven't coded in years, I believe this is the offending call: <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"> ord=Math.random()*10000000000000000; document.write('<script language="JavaScript" src="http://ad.doubleclick.net/adj/wiredcom.dart/gamelife;' + optionalYahooOverride + (urlDartKeywords || '') + 'kw=gamelife;kw=blogs;kw=top;tile=1;dcopt=ist;sz=728x90;ord=' + ord + '?" type="text/javascript"></scr' + 'ipt>'); </script> <noscript><a href="http://ad.doubleclick.net/jump/wiredcom.dart/gamelife;kw=gamelife;kw=blogs;kw=top;tile=1;sz=728x90;ord=123456789?" target="_blank"><img src="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/wiredcom.dart/gamelife;kw=gamelife;kw=blogs;kw=top;tile=1;sz=728x90;ord=123456789?" width="728" height="90" border="0" alt="Advertisement" /></a></noscript>
