My experimental results below should provide enough clues to find - and hopefully correct - the problem quickly. I have been experiencing this problem repeatedly for weeks. This is a major drawback, and I'll be using IE until the problem is fixed. Please help. I want to get back to Firefox ASAP.

I am using Firefox 3.6. You will find my Windows 7 system details as of 1:13 PM 3/18/2010 at http://www.raynerjd.com/_bugzilla-os_details/OS_info.php

First, a few days ago, I uninstalled Firefox, ran Uniblue's RegistryBooster to clean up the registry, then re-installed Firefox 3.6. The test I did today, 3/18/2010, was as follows:

Windows 7: Restart
Task Manager: firefox.exe is not running
Firefox:   did exit OK
Task Manager: firefox.exe is not running
Windows 7: Firefox invoked OK
Task Manager: firefox.exe is running
Windows 7: Firefox File -> New Window  PRODUCES NO RESPONSE
Task Manager: firefox.exe is running
Firefox:   did exit OK
Task Manager: firefox.exe IS STILL RUNNING after exit
Windows 7: Firefox invoke PRODUCES NO RESPONSE
Task Manager: firefox.exe is running
Task Manager: I killed firefox.exe
Windows 7: Firefox invoked OK

I can repeat this sequence from the top with the same results.

ALSO, the first time a HTML LINK is used that requests a new window, the behavior is exactly the same as when manually using Firefox File -> New Window as described above.

In my view the severity level should be set at CRITICAL. It's a pretty gross malfunction.

Ria Klaassen:  Please look at OS_info.php again. I've added another screen shot with explanation re runnning Windows 7 Diagnostic mode.
I tested the latest 3.0 version on Windows Vista with a new profile and had no problem opening new windows (in several ways).

And also, consider updating to Firefox 3.6; it has much improved.

Ria Klaassen: I told you in Comment 2 that am using Firefox 3.6. I will have a look at the Basic+Troubleshooting page(s), but I can assure you that right now, under Windows 7, I have a hardover fault as I described above. Whether or not the same problem manifests under Windows Vista, I do not know. Did you look at the page I put up on my site for you? Thanks.
This is a mass search for Firefox General bugs filed against version 3.0 that are UNCO and have not been changed for 200 days.

Reporter, please update to Firefox 3.6.10 or alter. Firefox 3.0 is no longer supported and is no longer receiving updates. After you update, please create a fresh profile, http://support.mozilla.com/kb/managing+profiles, and test to see if your bug still exists. If you still the bug, then please post a comment with the version you tested against, and the problem. If the issue is no longer there, please set the RESOLUTION to  RESOLVED, WORKSFORME.

No reply from reporter, INCOMPLETE. Please retest with Firefox 3.6.12 or later and a new profile (http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles). If you continue to see this issue with the newest firefox and a new profile, then please comment on this bug.
