If you get this in safari and Firefox, why do you think tht this is a Firefox issue ?
Isn't the flash plugin used for uploading on facebook ?
Which flash plugin do you have installed (use about:plugins) ?

I have Flash CS3. I am downloading Flash CS4 now.
I seem to think common factor is the latest Java update from Apple, as this seems to be when the problem started.
I did an upadte to Firefox a week ago, so thought it might have been that.
Thanks

Java Embedding Plugin 0.9.6.4
Comment 6•16 years ago
|
||
This started after an Java update for the reporter of bug 491266.
A plugin runs as part of the Browser process and can always hang or crash the browser. We have a bug for out of process plugins which would let firefox survive such a hang but it would not make the upload working again.
What is the story with JAva on OS X, is Java part of the OS and from apple ?
In that case you should complain directlry at Apple and that should be easier because Sadari is also affected.
If Java is from Sun like on win32/linux we have probably a contact from Sun.

Apple hasn't actually *released* any Java updates since September
2008. The Java Embedding Plugin works fine with them.
But Apple *has* recently made available (on its ADC site) a Java
"developer preview" for OS X 10.5.6 ("Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4
Developer Preview (9M3058)"). As best I can tell, this does break the
Java Embedding Plugin. When I've had a chance to investigate further,
I'll open a new bug and dup this bug to the new one.
None of Apple's Java updates can be uninstalled. But Apple does warn
you that the update "has received only limited testing and should not
be installed on a system with critical data".
As best I can tell, your only recourse is to reinstall OS X 10.5.6 and
run Software Update. This should restore Java to the September 2008
release ("Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2").

Oops, Apple's Java page (http://developer.apple.com/java/) is wrong.
Apple released a "Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 3" in February 2009
(http://support.apple.com/kb/DL784).
But the JEP also works fine with this update.

You may also be able to download "Update 3"
(http://support.apple.com/kb/DL784) and "reinstall" it.

Seems so sorru for the duplicate.
Having another mac @ home running the "Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 3" :
java version "1.5.0_16"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_16-b06-284)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_16-133, mixed mode, sharing)
vs. mine own mac which has:
java version "1.5.0_16"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_16-b06-290)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_16-134, mixed mode, sharing)
-------
But the stange thing is that this does not affect either "safari 4 beta" or the "standard sf3", on my own mac, as it's described in the bug for comment 4 in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=491600#c4
Another thing i tried symlinking to the the version 1.4 of java on my mahcine which affects the whole java environment home, since symlinking the
the "CurrentJDK" to the wanted library in the "Java Versions home" under /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions

Does not make firefox respond either, which means it linking default to a specified java environment.
Does anybody know or give me a detail on how to know which java env Firefox is looking up on ?

K any reason that the java plugin looksup on the specified 1.5 version and there is no option to disable 1.5 or make i default to a specific version of java?
This is the ouput from my about: plugins page for java:
application/x-java-applet;version=1.3 Embedded Java Applet xja13 Yes
application/x-java-applet;version=1.5 Embedded Java Applet xja15 Yes

#### Running Java 1.6
I could make java run i firefox and default to the 1.6 version if:
1. Moved the 1.5.0 versions files under /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions to a tmp directory.
2. Removed the Symlink.
3. Made the CurrentJDK point the 1.6
Then:
1. I went to the processing site and went under some examples and everyhting runned fine.
2. Went to this site > http://browserspy.dk/java.php says the firefox is now running 1.6 version of java.
#### Reproducing bugs
1. Moved the 1.5.0 files back to the /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions directory
2. Java still running still says 1.6 in firefox but says 1.5 in flock using this url http://browserspy.dk/java.php.
3. Removed the Profiles for both firefox and flock to compare still says 1.6 in firefox but 1.5 in flock and java is running fine in both browsers.
4. Now i add back the symlink for 1.5 pointing to the 1.5.0 files, now both firefox and flock freezes.
4.1 I even started firefox back again with this page http://browserspy.dk/java.php it says 1.6 but still firefox is freezing.
4.2 I make the CurrentJDK point to the 1.5 files, and restart firefox with a clean profile and use the http://browserspy.dk/java.php, it says 1.6 still.
#### Conclusions
1. It seems firefox lookups on the latest java versions from the /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions directory or some other place.
2. But it will default to startup the 1.5 java version, if available. Otherwise it will lookup on the latest version which in this case was the 1.6 distro available when i removed the 1.5 symlink.
Hope this info helps...
You're in for a world of hurt if you start messing around with the symlinks inside the JavaVM.framework. The correct way to set the preferred JVM for browser applets and for stand-alone Java applications is to use the Java Preferences application in /Applications/Utilities/Java.
Note that Java 1.6 (aka Java SE 6) is 64-bit only, so it cannot be used to run browser applets in 32-bit browsers like Firefox.

Closing WFM per comment 15, since now after whiteboard closeme date and no reply to last comment.
Please reopen/comment with further info, if you still see this issue with Firefox 3.6.13 or later, with a clean profile and the latest version of the plugin.
If you wish, you can also try to reproduce in Firefox 4 Beta 8 or later:
