The smart mailboxes server is a hidden server - we should not be creating special folders for it. The Trash folder we create, in particular, gets in the way of the smart trash saved search we'd like to create.

I found my smart mailbox trash folder was horked, so I tried to delete the .msf file, but it kept coming back when I restarted, which prevented the smart mailbox code from creating the right kind of trash.

I may need to fix the smart mailbox folder pane code to detect the bogus trash and fix it as well.

This isn't the right patch.

to test, you could delete Trash and Trash.msf from your smart folders dir, and startup in a folder pane mode other than smart folders - those files should not get created until you switch to smart folders mode.
