If you realize that you've made a mistake entering a url after you've started navigating to it (like after you see the 404 page or after you've spent quite a while spinning) you can't edit it to fix your mistake.  As soon as you click on the address bar, it reverts to the previous url.
I don't understand... what "previous URL" does it revert to, if not the one you typoed? Is there a redirect involved?
if I'm on and type in, when that fails and I click on the address bar it shows
Oh, we should definitely have updated that URL by the time a 404 page shows up. Maybe some of the pageload optimizations broke that, though.

Or maybe we just need to reimplement Firefox's userTypedClear/userTypedValue stuff :(
