Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042315 Firefox/3.0.10
Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.21 (20090302)

If the user opens a received, non-cached, email with an attached, large image there is a noticeable pause before the email text appears in the window. I presume this is because Thunderbird is downloading the image. When the email text appears in the mail window, the image is slowly being rendered - presumably because Thunderbird is loading the image again.

Then if you right-click to download the image, it downloads the image a third time.

For large attachments over a slow network link this triples the amount of data you need to download.
It appears, at least for large images, that if you wish to copy an image from an IMAP server to your local computer, you need to download the image three times.

Note: This might also occur for non-image attachments. Although Thunderbird might only end up downloading them twice, since it doesn't need to display them in the email text window.

Note: I connect to my mail using an IMAP mail server using port 993 (SSL). I'm happy to provide further technical details if relevant.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Send an email with a large image attachment to your IMAP email account. The image should be large enough so that there would be a very noticeable pause when downloading.
2. Open the email on a different computer than your IMAP mail server (Preferably one not on the same LAN).
3. Open the email using a single click (i.e. don't open it in a new window). Right-click on the image and save.
Actual Results:
The image appears to be downloaded three times.

Expected Results:
The image should be downloaded only once and cached while the email is being viewed. Extra bonus points if you cache the image when the email is closed.
