I used a GMail address that in the form "[e-mail]" for a support call.  This causes GMail to see the "something" part as an alias.  That portion is ignored.  TB can see the full address, but ignores it.  They won't accept replies unless I use the exact address they sent to.  Hence, TB needs to at least use the alias -- not my default account.  Better yet, let me specify which one somehow.  This support might end up being in the form of a Gmail-specific extension.  As such, for your GMail account, it might add an option to choose an alias.  This works because the alias will always be built around your real address.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Get e-mail sent to your GMail address in the form of "[e-mail]".
2. Reply to the e-mail.
3. TB either uses your default account (not GMail for me) or your normal GMail account.  If you want to use the alias, you can't.
Actual Results:  
We need to be able to send with GMail aliases, but can't.

Expected Results:  
I should be able to send and reply with a GMail alias.

Open Thunderbird's Account settings, and click "Manage Identities".  Add the alias email address as an identity.

Well, it works if you set up the plus address as an identity. Otherwise not.

This feature is not specific to Gmail and it's simply using the same From address that the message was sent To. Stripping the subaddress is improper and not standards compliant with RFC 5233.
