This is caused when you change the pointer to the profiles folder in %Appdata%/thunderbird/profiles.ini. It can be fixed by changing it back to the original setting, but prevents you from migrating to another computer. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.change the path= value to '(any-8-chars).defaut' other than the original. 2. 3. Actual Results: Thunderbird will report that you have another instance open and must close that before you can start another window. Expected Results: Reconised the new profile and finished with the migration. Was able to bypass this by using another open source program called MozBackup avillable at mozbackup.jasnapaka.com. It was able to backup and restore the accounts accross computers.
Whenever Thunderbird is using the profile, it creates a little lock file to indicate that the profile is in use. So directly copying the profile folder won't work if you have Thunderbird running when you do the folder copy. You may have to wait a little for Thunderbird to fully close down before copying. In any case, there are also instructions for what to do if you see this error, so -> RESO INVA.
