[enter to soon, sorry about that] Possible solution would be to create images similar to http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/browser/themes/pinstripe/browser/hud-panel.png but with the arrows pointing down, left, right, and then choose the one we want to go with depending on the location of the window creating the panel, and where we expect the panel to draw.

Note that this bug will not be specific to OS X when the other platforms start to use similar presentations for the panels.
Also JetPack is potentially going to expose these types of panels at some point as a common UI element, so in that case there is an increased chance of needing to draw the arrow in a different direction.
This bug's priority relative to the set of other polish bugs is: P4 - Polish issue that is rarely encountered, and is easily identifiable. Obvious when it happens, but only happens when the window is an other kind of odd position on the screen, which isn't incredibly common.
Whiteboard: [polish-hard] [polish-interactive] → [polish-hard] [polish-interactive][polish-p4]
So I'm on 3.0.x (on Mac), and there's simply no arrow. That seems like a more simple solution to me... is there a reason to want/need the arrow? :-)
