We've seen this a few times. When we display a node (e.g. an aggregated RSS post) that contains broken HTML (e.g. a missing </p>), the rest of the page breaks. Usually this is a broken footer. http://drupal.org/project/htmltidy ^^ is a Drupal 6 module that uses the HTML Tidy package to fix these nodes. It's worth looking into after we do the Drupal 6 migration.
Is the 5.x development version any good for the current site?
