If we are going to have an arrow, let's make it point in the right direction, that is, downthread.
Attaching a mockup, and the modified source png. If my placement was correct, all that needs to done is replace the original message.png

I don't see why it would point downwards. All reply buttons i've ever seen are some form of "<-"

See my example attachment, note that the reply icon does not point to my actual reply.

Well downwards wouldn't either. Anyway, "<-" seems like the usual analogy to me.

I like the idea to make the messages and their replies seem more connected. I'm not sure the down arrow is going to work. Also do you think we'd fall back to the <- for non-threaded listing?

This is a cool idea but the <- reply icon is so standard in email clients we would need a lot of testing to show that this alternate representation is worth being different than most other systems.
