assertion backtrace

Create a new newsgroup account to news.newsfan.net then go to manage newsgroup subscriptions. Click on alt, then subscribe. This assertion then shows.

Relevant code is at:

http://hg.mozilla.org/comm-central/file/61d5f8fd0fe2/mailnews/base/src/nsSubscribableServer.cpp#l190

It doesn't have to be a newsgroup at news.newsfan.net - can be any newsgroup server. Just be sure to select a group with that server that has several tree levels of groups under it, then click subscribe.

Keywords: assertion
The assertion doesn't look all that much of a bad thing--it's just the UI failing to check that the node is a valid subscribable node before subscribing.

And strictly speaking, it's not a news bug: IMAP will have the exact same problem (try subscribing to, e.g., the [Gmail] folder).
