User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008120121 Firefox/3.0.5
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1b3pre) Gecko/20090223 Thunderbird/3.0b2

As I'm typing in the To, CC, or BCC fields, Thunderbird's automatic recall feature does not bring up the most RECENT or most FREQUENTLY used address book entries. It usually defaults in the list of available options to people that I've only emailed once or twice a long time ago. Older versions of Thunderbird had a much more sophisticated mechanism for remembering either recent or frequently used email addresses. Thanks!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a new compose window
2. Start typing a person's name or email address
3. See that as you type the default selection that Thunderbird chooses is not a recently emailed person or if it is, it does not default select the email address that one almost always uses.
Actual Results:
You have to arrow down to the correct person and/or email address. Tedious.

Expected Results:
Thunderbird used to put at the top of the list my most often/recently used contacts.
I think this is working for me actually, but I recall seeing some other report about it too. (Maybe the popularity index gets a one-time hosing on upgrade?)
Whiteboard: DUPEME
It's not a one-time upgrade issue. It's persistent. For instance, I continue to email only one of the "Jane"s in my address book, but this "Jane" is never the default selected "Jane" in my TO: compose list. I upgraded Thunderbird a long time ago and it appears Thunderbird is not collecting any usage history on who I am emailing. Thanks again. This is mildly a big deal as it can cause the inattentive emailer to send to a stranger with the same first name.
is this for all addresses, or just the primary address or the secondary addressfor the contact?
I think all of my address book entries have only one email address. I set up a secondary email address in one contact, and it does not show up as an option when typing his name in the To: field.
The secondary email address not auto-completing is bug 447927.

jcwk, have your behaviours changed recently as to who you send most email to? It may take a while for the counts to realign themselves as we don't currently age over time (bug 382415).

I have just done a simple test:

- Eradicate all cards for two test email addresses from my address books.
- Send one email to each of the two test addresses.
- Go into address book and give them similar display/first/last names, e.g. foo1 and foo2.
- Go into compose window, type foo -> foo1 is listed first because I've currently sent one email to both and it does it alphanumerically.
- Send the email to foo2.
- Compose a new email, type foo -> now foo2 is listed first.

Repeat with differing orders and you'll see them swap back and forth depending on the counts.

This is with Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1pre) Gecko/20090626 Shredder/3.0b3pre and hence works for me.

So the only potential issue I see here is really bug 382415, jcwk could that be your issue?

no response from jcwk, so taking standard8's best estimate of bug 382415
