For a long time, customizing toolbar icons as well as copy/paste does no longer work in TB 3 trunk versions on Win 2k. Trying several trunk builds to narrow down the problems indicate the last version working as it should is 3.0a1pre (2007103102), the first one suffering both issues is 3.0a1pre (2007110103). What seems to be two different problems might therefore be related, so this bug addresses both.

This may be OS related, as no-one mentioned them before and not many users may be using Win2k nowadays. For comparison, one can use the versions on ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/nightly/2007/10/2007-10-31-02-trunk/ and ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/nightly/2007/11/2007-11-01-03-trunk/ .

Won't block on a win2k-only bug. If this is more than win2k, then we can reconsider.
Flags: blocking-thunderbird3? → blocking-thunderbird3-
plus w2k won't officially be supported.

but for the record, win 2000, based on limited testing:
WFM version 3 alpha 1 (20060911)
WFM 3.0b3

Ton, do you see this with very recent builds or 3.0b3?

Huh? It's only win9X that's getting dropped. Unless i missed some recent update.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_2000 : “Extended Support Period until 13 July 2010. Security updates and security-related hotfixes will be provided free of cost. Paid support is still available.”

Not sure how to see this from a developer’s point of view, but there hasn´t been a real change of code that deliberately stopped TB from having a working toolbar customization and copy/paste feature on Win2000 during the time frame mentioned in comment 0, has there? Thus it should still work and be considered as a regression IMO.

I still see this in the most recent build, as with any build used after 2007-10-31.
My apologies for not noticing I reported this bug earlier about a year ago, see bug 467933 and its (latest) comments. Not sure if this bug is its dupe or the other way around is better, as this one addresses the copy/paste issue as well. Not sure about the proper component either.
I propose treating the two issues separately, even though the one-day regression-window in comment #0 might suggest they are related. Still, they might not be, and copy and paste problem is a lot worse than customize toolbars (bug 467933).
--> morphing this into Copy/Paste issue.
Depends on: 467933
Summary: Copy/paste and Toolbar customization do not work → [W2K] Copy/paste do not work (and Toolbar customization, bug 467933)

One of the main obstacles to fix this is the fact that we're not even seeing it, as per Wayne's comment #3. Please remember this is Win2K only!

Ton, could you please provide precise "Steps to reproduce" (STR) as a step by step instruction? Please be as specific as possible, to make sure we're doing exactly what you do when you get the bug:
fuzzy: "3. drag any icon from customization palette onto main mail toolbar"
precise: "3. drag quicksearch icon from customization palette onto main mail toolbar (or any icon for that matter)"
This is important because in the above example, it might also be the quicksearch icon causing the trouble, and perhaps other icons work but you never noticed.

duh, confusion rules, what we really want in THIS bug is steps for COPY & PASTE only (NOT for customizing toolbars, which has its own bug 467933).

That's

Steps to reproduce

1. Install a fresh recent TB 3.0pre build and create a new profile
2. In the message pane of the main mail window, select any text in the default TB welcome message (like ‘Congratulations!’, or any text in a freshly retrieved e-mail message using the mouse
3. Right-click the selected text and choose Copy (or choose Edit - Copy in the View menu)
4. Open up a Notepad window, right-click the mouse and choose Paste (or use Paste from the View menu)

Actual results:
‘Copy’ as well as ‘Paste’ change from greyed out to black in the menus in all cases, but no text is pasted at all, or text previously copied from another application is actually pasted.

Expected results:
The selected and copied text is pasted in the Notepad window.

Note: this happens with any text copied from the program and in any window, like an entered e-mail address in the Account settings window, copied info from Help - About, etc.
Sidenote: as with any pre-release versions of Mozilla products used for testing (like FF, SB, SM) I use zip builds only. I can’t imagine any registry changes are required, thus needing the installer.
The problem appears to be related to bug 525601 (Copy and cut (clipboard) functions do not work in SM 2.0), where apparently the copy/paste and toolbar customization gets broken when some DLL’s are loaded. For SM 2.0 as well as TB 3.0pre, this is caused by Tortoise 0.5 shell extension in my case. Renaming one or more of its related DLL files makes both issues disappear.

See bug 525601 for details. Not sure now whether or not this bug is W2K only now - probably not, as that bug appears to affect XP users as well.

bug 525601 is no longer W2k-only related as a different program affects the copy/paste SM 2.0 problem in W2k/XP/Vista/7 machines.

Ton, try reproducing the problem with other versions of the Tortoise shell extension, Seamonkey 2.0.x and Windows 2000. I've just attempted to reproduce the copy/paste bug with TortoiseHg 0.9 and the problem no longer occurs on my relative's Win2000 computer. Copy/paste functions in SM 2.0.2 under Win2k seem to work properly with Tortoise 0.9 shell extension. Don't know if versions 0.6, 0.7, 0.8 and some others would make the bug happen in Seamonkey.

In short, upgrade the Tortoise shell extension (to the latest version possible for Win2k). you will need to uninstall any existing version of TortoiseHg first before installing the new one.

strange that the creators of TortoiseHg seem to have abandoned Win2k support. read here:
http://www.mail-archive.com/tortoisehg-discuss@lists.sourceforge.net/msg01575.html

And the Tortoise web site only mentions the "supported" Windows platforms: XP, Vista and 7.

TortoiseHg 0.5 + Windows 2000!
