Don't use google desktop. Never downloaded. Never installed.
Please type :
netsh winsock show catalog >c:\lsp.txt

in a commandline window (start/execute/cmd.exe) and after that attach the file c:\lsp.txt to this bug using the "Add an attchment" link" in this bug report.

Info: An on your system installed LSP is creating the error message.
LSP= http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Layered_service_provider and Firefox doesn't install one.

too bad that I can't find something unusual in the list...

One of your installed LSP is causing this and such an LSp is usually installed by Firewalls, Antivirus or other security software or malware.

Can you try http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm , it should not fix or find a problem but it should list the installed LSPs. Can you attach a screenshot from the window ?
