User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1) Gecko/20090624 Firefox/3.5
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1) Gecko/20090624 Firefox/3.5

When I close Firefox, the task in the Task Manager (Processes - "firefox.exe") does not close. And on top of that, the CPU usage of that task climbs from 0-2% to 50% or more. So it has to be closed manually from the Task Manager.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Firefox and Task Manager.
2. Load any web page and watch Task Manager (firefox.exe 2%).
3. Close Firefox and watch Task Manager (firefox.exe 50%).
4. Wait to see that firefox.exe does not close on its own.
5. Terminate the firefox.exe task from the Task Manager.

Expected Results:
The firefox.exe should terminate shortly after Firefox is closed.

Hi,

does this issue also occur with a clean Profile? See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles on how to create a new one.
Version: unspecified → 3.5 Branch
Yes it does I have the same issue,
I have made a complete removal and then re-installed
Firefox 3.5.1. The issue is still there.
If it can help my AddOns are:
AVG Safe Search 8.5
Microsoft .NET framework assistant
Skype Extension for Firefox 2.2.0.102
I have the same problem nearly every time I close Firefox. My hard drive begins to run continuously, and when I check firefox.exe it is still visible in Process tab in Task Manager, and the memory usage continues to increase until I end the process. Version 3.6 also has the problem.
Reporter, are you still seeing this issue with Firefox 3.6.13 or later in safe mode or a fresh profile? If not, please close. These links can help you in your testing.

I'm seeing this behavior on the RC build of Fx29 after visiting speed-battle.com and running tests a few times.
I did observe this happen on Fx29.0b9 on a different machine.
Still there in Fx32.0.3 under XP x86. Had to end process tree in Task Manager to free the memory trapped in the firefox.exe process. Screenshot: http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa323/rn10950/ff_afterquit.png
