I'm finding Firefox 3.5 is very slow to Open and to Quit

Extensions can cause a slow open. Try starting in Firefox safe mode. Try with 3.5.1 as well.

3.5.1 is indeed faster, and I think safe mood speeded it up a bit as well.

Well, safe mode disables extensions, so one of them may be causing this. Disable them one by one until you find the cause. Or create a new profile, and install them one by one.
