filing this to keep on my radar.

We need to have on mozilla.com a page proposing the 4 Spanish versions of Firefox we support on mozilla.com, probably mozilla.com/es/

This page will propose the different variants of Spanish we currently support (Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Chile) to people using a browser in a Spanish version we don't currently support (Venezuela, Peru...) or to people currently using a browser identifying itself as simply 'es' (IE6 users for example).

I will work with our es-* web localizers on this so as to find the best way to explain it.
Component: www.mozilla.org/firefox → www.mozilla.org
Component: www.mozilla.org → General
Product: Websites → www.mozilla.org
Locale: es-AR / Spanish (Argentina), es-CL / Spanish (Chile), es-ES / Spanish (Spain), es-MX / Spanish (Mexico)
Component: General → L10N
Adding some folks from Spanish community (guys, please add anybody I may have missed).

Pascal, is there anything we can do to move this forward? As we saw by the reports provided in bug 856887, only Mexico is getting its own es-* localization as the main used in the corresponding country. In particular, es-AR case is somewhat surprising, being used less than es-ES in Argentina, when both localizations exist at least since 2002. Something is not right in the current download page to clearly put apart visitors from several countries speaking the same language.
Ricardo, I don't have an answer and realistically it's very unlikely that I will work on that anytime soon therefore I prefer to unassign myself from this bug.

Could be implemented a redirect to another download page for browsers that identifies just as "es"? With this users should get the correct locale when they migrate to Mozilla Firefox
I like your design, Richard. We'll need to find out from Web Dev who has the cycles to add this to their list of priorities for mozilla.org. Pascal, Guillermo, do you know who to bring this up to in order to spec out the work involved and get started?

Richard, perhaps if you or some other localizers with web dev skills would be willing to help code the site, that would increase the odds of it being adopted quicker?

+growth team folks (cmore and habber) who have an eye on all current browser download optimization projects.

This is a good example of a use-case for a language that is present in multiple locations around the world. We also have a use-case where a single location could have multiple languages that we'd want to notify the user about (e.g.: India).

Another option for handling this in the UI would be taking the approach of detecting the users' location and prioritize a language for them, while offering a less-prominent way to show the alternates. This kind of presentation would allow us to handle both use-cases mentioned above. I'm not an expert on the use-case for spanish, but I'm assuming if somebody is in Argentina, for instance, they probably don't need the Spain download at equal priority.

Agreed that this would be a good candidate for testing.

This point is very important because of localization through browser could download their region and that no matter what Holly says.

I agree with Odin, this would be a good way of going about this.

We would need to do a fair bit of discoverability testing on a global level. Currently, if you're in Mexico looking to download Firefox, you're directed to the es-ES localization page instead of the es-MX page. Any element of using region or location to more prominently display one language over another would need to be tested across a wide spectrum of locations. I'm more than happy to help coordinate that.

Perhaps, from a UX perspective, this prioritization could be exposed in the form of sorting and larger download buttons for the suggested option at the top of the list?

Enter http://www.mozilla.com
Seems that IE 7 or newer gives the right localization if Windows is properly configured.
Chrome shows es-ES.
Safari (on OS X) shows es-ES

¡Hola Pascal!

Is this still on your radar?

Just stumbled into this bug while looking at https://l10n.mozilla-community.org/webdashboard/?locale=es-MX so apologies for being late to the party =)

If I go to https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/new/ in Mexican Edge I get redirected to https://www.mozilla.org/es-MX/firefox/new/ which I thing is a sensible thing.

Am I missing something?

What are your steps for this bug or the proposed design?

¡Gracias!
Alex

Hi Alex,

8 years ago that was a frequent request by our community, as a mexican your case is covered since we support es-MX, that page was meant to give choice to Spanish speakers from countries where we don't support their locale. I no longer work in l10n, so you should ask people like :flod what to do with it.

Cheers

¡Hola Flod!

¿Qué hacemos con esto? =)

Ehm, wrong person (it feels like we're pushing you around like a ball). I'm not in charge of mozilla.org, Peiying is.

Having said that, I would prefer a solution to promote alternative languages based on location than a special download page for Spanish, and that requires developer resources as well (and product decisions).

Personally, I think this bug should be a wontfix.

To be honest, I'm tired of seeing this bug after 9 years with no real progress. I'm all for closing it, too. If nobody jumps in with a feasible proposal, I'll close it before the end of the year.
Since nobody jumped on, I'm closing the bug as wontfix.
