I normally use saved searches to create virtual folders of new mail from certain senders. For example, all of the topic reply notifications from Mozillazine. It would be useful to have the option of saving a saved search as a pseudo account rather than just a folder. That way it would be listed in smart folders.

Another reason why it would be useful is that if you have lots of accounts you tend to keep most of them collapsed. If a saved search is just another folder you have to expand the account to see whether or not there is new mail in that folder. If your saved search contains all of your urgent mail or all of your new mail from one sender its useful to be able to treat it as pseudo account so that you can see at a glance how many new messages it has.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned before[1]. although, clearly the initial focus for smart folders was/is special folders, it would be nice to have virtual folders in unified mode, or some other means of having them bubble up into view.
