Seems to be caused by image-preloading, yes... :( Is the crash reproducible or does it occur randomly? What about timing (if memory serves me well, Talos uses a time-limit for loading a URL) - is the crash related to reaching this limit somehow?
Spent some time looking at this today... crash is somewhere in the macro at http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/xpcom/base/nsAgg.h#337 (aka nsLoadGroupConstructor) which probably is called when creating the loadgroup for a new imagechannel in imgLoader.LoadImage(). GCC throws SIGABRT when unable to allocate memory, right? So, crash seems to occur in code which was around long before img-preloading. On the other hand, preloading does change the order of memory-allocation for images, possibly causing bursts. Observe that the stack (in particular pc-position in libstdc) looks identical to bug #506589 and bug #421065 (not the initial report). This is different from bug #501960 (for example) which is a segfault probably caused by accessing memory, as opposed to failing when allocating more. If we believe this crash is triggered by img-preloading it may be worthwhile to study allocates/releases in the img-cache when subject to the mechanism used by img-preloading to pin down images in use, looking for bursts in particular. Is there a "desired" behaviour in FF when no more memory can be allocated? And catching exceptions is completely out of the question?

In that case, unwind safely back to caller and throw JS exception or otherwise report the error. dbaron pointed out that crashes like this could be triggered by heap corruption too, not just OOM.
