Ryan - because we use the WP blogname for a bunch of things, how hard would it be to do some basic text manipulation of this field (strip spaces, lowercase)?

r48053 strips spaces and converts to lowercase. I also think this bug is about the header image being too big. Re-assigning back to Neil.

I think this has been fixed except for one bug it introduced, but that has been filed separately.  Resolving as fixed - reopen if I'm wrong.
