User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en; rv:1.9.0.14pre) Gecko/2009081801 Camino/2.0b4pre (like Firefox/3.0.14pre) Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en; rv:1.9.0.14pre) Gecko/2009081801 Camino/2.0b4pre (like Firefox/3.0.14pre) because i don't have room for my downloads on my startup drive, i've put my Downloads folder on another drive and an alias to it in my home directory. if i select that alias as my download location in Camino's preferences, my download attempts throw an error saying: /Users/tiger/Downloads/BwzXX7QB.dmg.part could not be saved, because an unknown error occurred. Try saving to a different location. choosing the actual folder in Camino's download preferences fixes the problem - but Camino should know what to do with an alias. Firefox and Safari do. thanks. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. put your Downloads folder on a drive other than your startup drive (don't know if this is strictly necessary, but it's what i've done). 2. create an alias in your home directory to that Downloads folder. 3. select the alias as your download location in Camino's preferences. 4. download a file (without using Download Link Target...) Actual Results: error message: /Users/[home directory name]/Downloads/[filename] could not be saved, because an unknown error occurred. Try saving to a different location. Expected Results: Camino should have downloaded the file to the location pointed to by the alias to which i pointed Camino's download preferences. the workaround is easy, but your average, less computationally proficient Joes might be stopped in their tracks by something like this.
We seem to resolve aliases to their original folders when setting the download location pref. I'm unable to reproduce this with an alias to a folder on the same volume, an alias to a folder on a mounted AFP volume, and an alias to a folder on a mounted Read/Write .dmg. I don't have a physical external disk to test against, but if we're resolving the alias when setting the pref (and if all my tests succeeded), I don't see how this could happen.
Can you provide more information about the volumes involved here? Are they both standard "Mac OS Extended Journaled" disks?
Whiteboard: [CLOSEME - 10/11]
they're both standard Mac OS Extended Journaled disks; the alias is on my internal startup drive and the original folder is on an external USB drive.
If you go back to the Downloads preferences and select the alias as the download folder again, does it work? (I know that sounds silly, but I can't figure out what might be happening differently on your Mac.) Also, if you test with a fresh profile, does it work (you can use http://pimpmycamino.com/parts/troubleshoot-camino to launch Camino with a fresh profile)?
Can you please respond to comment 4?
