I can't put my finger on the causative factor. It is only the last few weeks or month that I am having this problem. It has become disruptive enough that if you can't suggest a solution -- WITHOUT my having to dig through other people's bug reports -- I will have to abandon Firefox, which until now has been my browser of choice.

First, if you are looking for a solution, this is the wrong place. Bugzilla is not a support site where you get quick answers to your issues. support.mozilla.com is what that is for.
However, if you would like to give some info, we can try to find the root of the problem, and, if it is not our fault, fix the bug in the firefox code that is causing it.
First off, please create a new firefox profile, and try to get it to crash there.
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles
Then, please give some of the crash ids from your old profile,
https://developer.mozilla.org/En/How_to_get_a_stacktrace_for_a_bug_report.
Also, make sure your plugins, such as flash, java, quicktime, etc. are all up to the latest version that are available on the vendor's websites.
please report back with your results.

Reporter, are you still seeing this issue with Firefox 3.6.13 or later in safe mode or a fresh profile? If not, please close. These links can help you in your testing.

This bug has had the CLOSEME tag for several weeks and the date in the tag is far gone. If the reporter can still see this issue, Please retest with Firefox 3.6.x or later and a new profile (http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles). Then please remove the closeme tag in the whiteboard, mark the bug against the proper version and comment on the bug.
