Believe this was lost in the change from 2.x to 3.x.  The history sidebar sorts the history by today, yesterday, last 7 days, this month, then lists the prior 4 months individually. 

What is needed is sort by the last 7 days individually, then perhaps "this month."  Options/Privacy is checked to "remember history for at least 10 days."  Is 5 months included in "at least"?  Does anyone really go back that far?  Most searches are for recent, not ancient history.

this won't happen, we are investigating changes in the UI for next versions, but the sidebar won't likely receive further splitting for now.

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".

In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body   contains   places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.

Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
