I am experiencing the same issue. My web-page validates as XHTML Transitional
1.0 with no errors. My Javascript also validates without any error.

Once I remove the header, the JavaScript runs perfectly.

If I leave the header in the document, the JavaScript will not run. This has
only been an issue with both FireFox and Safari. It is not an issue with IE or
Opera. Both of those browsers will run the JavaScript correctly. I have heard
some chatter on the Internet about this issue, but no solution.

So I have had to remove the header from my web-pages.
