Build Identifier: version 2.0.0.23 (20090812)
Even after tech support diligently went through my settings with me thunderbird is still not able to send or receive - "could not connect to pophm.sympatico.ca; the connection was refused" There is not place in the account settings to enter a password. Could that be a problem?
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Click on "Get Mail"
2. Error Message "could not connect to pophm.sympatico.ca; the connection was refused"
3. [same happens for outgoing smtphm.sympatico.ca when I try to send]
Tweaking settings by tech support for sympatico does not help - tried every single one over one hour of time.
Actual Results:
As noted. But to review in more detail - we tried everything. The account was deleted and re-entered from scratch. The account was tweaked and fine-tuned to make sure that all the settings were right. Sympatico is happy to provide access to my mail on the server and (now) to MSOutlook, where I can enter my password. The thunderbird will not take my password, and appears to be unresponsive. Dead.
Expected Results:
Mail coming in and outgoing without any real hassles in getting it to work.
No themes are applied, but I have to wonder if there is a shadow copy or a chrome setting that may be interfering with a smooth transition to ongoing use of your latest Thunderbird 2.x version. Whatever the answer, it is very discouraging, and I have put more time into making Thunderbird work than some people go to work for one day. No more thunderbird for me for several months. Time is precious.
I live in Canada's largest city, Toronto. Sympatico.ca, also called bellmail.ca is one of the biggest servers here. Think Verizon if you are American.

Can you check your firewall settings , make sure the new version is authorized to access the internet.

No, Thunderbord asks you for a password if the server asks for it.
It can not ask you for a password if the connection doesn't work.

Feisty - can you check comment #3 and #2 please ?
First of all, thank you, all of you for such a lot of attention to this problem. I wish I could say that any or all of your suggestions had worked. I really tried them all. The firewall was lowered briefly, although it usually prompts if it thinks it might have detected something dangerous. I went to page with Bell Sympatico Mail Settings and discovered that the mail settings given to me by tech support yesterday over the phone were not the same, so I altered them yet again, to be in sync with what was on the page. But nada. It was all of no use because nothing changed. Still a long wait with the same result. The same message comes up - connection refused - and I have no idea why. I do know THIS, that there was never a problem, never ever, until I loaded the upgrade to a new version of mozilla.
There is something else that I know. I am super-busy now, and working a lot. Realistically I just can not keep this up, though I would love to help.
I suggest that somebody else who has already a sympatico account (working or not) helps you, or that you purchase one for a limited trial period, just for the purpose of problem solving. Undoubtedly we will all win.
I have done my bit for now. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.
