From comment on my blog post: Any chance we could add gravatars to the post headers and to the directory of bloggers being syndicated to planet? (http://en.gravatar.com/) It would really help separate the posts and give a stronger sense of community. This would also help with post separation. http://davidwboswell.wordpress.com/2009/09/03/planet-mozilla-now-with-large-dino-head/#comment-2336
I don't think we can, actually, because we'd have to know the email address of the user who's posting, which we don't always (or maybe even often?) know. But there might be another way to do this that I don't know of...
Sam's right... there's not really a good way to do this, as we don't have the e-mail address for every poster. However, we _can_ easily support doing manual "faces", as planet supports that. We just never have really looked into it much.
When mozillians.org is up, it would be cool to be able to have faces that linked to people's pages on the directory.
Yea, Gravatar is pretty much out. Not really fond of using a 3rd party service for something like that anyway. Besides, planet does have faces... lots of other planet instances uses it.
Changing summary.
Summary: Add Gravatars → Add Faces to pmo
I have been working with and talking with David Boswell on mozilla.org he suggested i post something on this bug please view attached image as a mock up how difficult would it be to add a 10x10 facebook and or twitter icons next to each member that uses facebook or twitter I find myself searching to try and find a mozilla friend only to find out a member is useing a few different nicknames for the members in the mozilla office its not a big deal to find a name, this would be a big project to get every members facebook and twitter account if a given member would want us to promote the accounts I am more then willing to help in anyway
Re comment #6, this should be something we can do once the community CRM is up. In someone's profile they could include their twitter, facebook, etc. accounts and tag which ones they'd like to show up on Planet along with their picture. I'm copying Gerv on this who has expressed interest in different ways we could integrate profiles into different community tools.
I agree it's a cool idea, but it should be opt in. While many I'm sure don't mind (and some love the opportunity to pimp themselves out further), others prefer to keep their online identities a little more separate. I think it's important to respect that. I don't think we should hunt people. We should contact and ask if they want to join in.
Right. The CRM should be queryable - "give me a photo for the person with this blog URL". That's definitely the right way to do it. (Perhaps planet could cache the photos for performance.) Gerv
The Planet software can do it. It really creates more a sense of community. Right now all the posts run together and I don't really notice who is saying what. If you look at a Planet with pictures, you get a much better feel for the people. You feel like you are one of them, you can introduce yourself at a conference, etc. If we just turn on the ability in Planet and then let people know how to submit pictures, I think it will happen over time. If someone doesn't submit a picture, they'll just get the default icon. I think adding pictures to Planet Mozilla would really benefit our community. I bet we'd get more requests to add relevant blogs too from other Mozillians.
I'd really like to wire up faces (or other avatars) to profiles in the new Mozilla directory. Maybe we can take a swipe at doing that all in one go?
CCing Aakash for comment on comment #11 about phonebook integration.

I'm going to close this. Planet has a lot of team/group blogs on it now, and feeds aren't directly tied to email addresses.
... which is what Gravatar would need to work. So.
