In June, Seth Bindernagel wrote about "Does localizing the Getting Started page lead to a better end-user experience for Firefox?". I thought about it and I think the German dictionaries should be more present to the user. I only know very very few Firefox users who installed a dictionary without assistance. Most users don't know at all that there are dictionaries to ease good writing in blogs, etc.
First, what I did was to add a link to the dictionaries of the Add-ons website in the header menu of mozilla-europe.org/de.
Second, we should implement Seth's idea of a better user experience at the most viewed Mozilla pages itself. Kadir Topal and I talked about it and we think the Firstrun and/or the Whatsnew pages would be the best way to reach most people.
At the Firefox Central page, the translated text "Don’t get bogged down worrying about your spelling—Firefox’s built-in spellchecker will do it for you." isn't very helpful for German users: no information how to download a dictionary is available. Maybe a link to https://support.mozilla.com/de/kb/Rechtschreibpr%C3%BCfung+nutzen could help? Is it allowed to directly link to the 3 German dictionaries at the Add-ons website?
What we should do:
1. Collecting ideas how to show the user that there are dictionaries for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
2. Discussing on which pages we should implement it (or if we should do that anyway).
3. Implementing the results at the German Mozilla website.

Closing old Mozilla.org website bugs due to them not being relevant to the new Python-based Bedrock system. Re-open if this is a critical bug and should be resolved on the new system too.

Pascal (or Thomas): Did this get fixed sometime ago?

AFAIK, nothing has happened here, and this is valid for whatsnew pages independent of what the underlying website platform is.

we no longer display a whatsnew page on updates, when we do, it is with a focused message on a specific feature we want to promote (for example about:newtab in Firefox 13), I don't think that page would be a good candidate for such a promo.

OK, in this case, this is INVALID in the current state. Would still be nice to have an avenue of telling people about the dictionaries, but that would be better as a new bug.
