Mentioned by clarkbw: AMO should directly show on upload the version number, not after going through all steps of the upload process. Developers have usually more than one (often all) version of their add-on and so can accidentally pick the wrong one.
I don't understand what this means. Can you please clarify?
I think he means immediately display the version number after the add-on author uploads the file. Seems like this could be fixed by authors paying attention to what they name their files. I'd recommend wontfix.
