We have a lot of old pages, and the only useful thing on these are release notes.

We should:
1) decommission old whatsnew, firstrun pages that belong to defunct versions
2) we should redirect these to pages that have the right info

Cases:
1) old product pages - redirect to generic "you're old" pages that encourage people to update
2) release notes - redirect all non-current versions to a single release notes archive page
I think this is a dupe of bug 431591 but if you want to avoid wading through a 30 comment bug, we can do it here too. One of the main complaints in that bug was differentiating security vs. feature releases - I didn't think it was a big deal if your version was old anyway, but other people did. There are a couple patches on that bug that might be helpful figuring out which releases are which.

Why? What's wrong with linking to the actual release notes? Why force users to jump through other hoops to get the release notes for a version?
Because I'm not scared of long pages. page#someversion is just as useful as someversion/page.html and with rewrites it'd be transparent.
For 3.5.x and 3.6.x I have the firstrun and what's new redirecting to the ones in 3.5 and 3.6. I think that's the proper way going forward instead of having them in the latest point release.

If we delete 3.5/* and 3.6/* the current versions will break. If you notice, once I made that change I no longer copy whatsnew and firstrun into the point release directories.

If we delete any 3.5.x and 3.6.y whatsnew and firstrun it should have no impact other than cleaning up the fs.

I love removing old pages! However, we've already removed most of these.

I removed a few more that are already redirected in trunk in r90533.

Steven,

How would you like to do a little more of this stuff?!

Everything from comment #9 is done in trunk. Chrissie, should I leave the bug open - is there more to come?

Steven,

Closing this down, and I'll open new ones as we have more opportunities to clean up. We're looking GREAT now!

Thank you

I'm not sure it was clear that these should be removed. Should they be?
steven, in r94017 (Comment #10) you removed the major-update survey, there was a /survey-thanks/ folder as well which was associated to this (the page displayed to thank people from taking the survey) and should be deleted too. I can do that and add the revision number to this bug if you wish.

Done - thanks Pascal.

Are there plans to push that cleanup to production? Some of these deleted files (the ebay and survey ones) are in locales folders and I like to keep those folders as close on trunk as possible to stage and production.

Yes, we should push this to production. I've been waiting on confirmation on the question in comments #13 and comment #14. Chrissie?
Let's push this and we can file a new bug for the remaining two pages in question if they remain an issue:
