Bug 516923 comment 18:
"Re why it's only sent and archive, not the other special
folders, I haven't changed anything there. It doesn't affect the folders you
see in smart folders mode, but it will affect folders are included in the top
level smart folder contents, i.e., the scope of the saved search.
Sent/Archives are the ones where I think it's important to see the contents of
the sub-folders in the top-level smart folder."
---
Usually special folders don't have any subfolders, but if people have them they want to to see them. If they have any subfolders people have them for a reason. (I use subfolders for Junk)
I'm a bit on the fence with Trash, but after some thinking i think it's best to include it - especially since otherwise you could do an "Empty Trash" and loose subfolders you didn't see. Same for "Empty Junk".

Just to be clear, you will see the sub-folders in smart folders mode without this patch - it's just that the messages in the sub-folders aren't shown in the top level smart folders. So it's a bit inconsistent, but I think the summary of this bug isn't quite right.

We have a number of reports all requesting that subfolders of an account's inbox (especially manually created subfolders of POP inbox) also need to be shown as subfolders of the account's *unified* inbox, because users have created these subfolders as *subfolders of inbox* for a reason.

Possible to consolidate these?
