User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090824 Firefox/3.5.3 GTB6 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090824 Firefox/3.5.3 GTB6 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)

When choosing to add a new bookmark through the standard "Bookmark This Page" process, I cannot Collapse or Expand (navigate) the Folders > Bookmark Menu > Expand Button > Tree. This has been an ongoing problem that I had hoped the 3.5 version would fix. It did not. I have tried to erase all bookmarks and then reload. I have also tried to recreate my profile and remove/reinstall Firefox. None of these things worked.
The first bookmarking proceedure works as expected when I first open Firefox. After I have added one bookmark for the app session, the remaining bookmark attempts do not work.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Click Bookmarks on Menu bar
2. Select Bookmark This Page
3. Choose "Bookmarks Menu" in the Folder section of the dialogue box.
4. Click the drop-down arrow next to the "Bookmarks Menu" in the folder section.
5. Try to collapse or expand the folder tree to place the new bookmark into the appropriate folder.
Actual Results:
When I first open Firefox, you can add the first bookmark without issue. After that, the folders do not collapse or expand. The arrow indicator will toggle, but the folder contents will not open or close. If you cancel, then go back through the reproducible steps, the folder will be in the last state selected.

For example, let's say I have a 1st level folder in the Bookmarks Menu named "Automobiles" and there is a subfolder named "Ford". I am trying to bookmark a webpage on the Ford Escape. Let's assume the folders are all collapsed when I try to bookmark through the 5 steps indicated. When I click the arrow, the folder will not expand, but the arrow will change. If I select cancel, then repeat the 5 steps, the Automobile 1st level folder will now be open. This must be done for every level within every folder.

Expected Results:
Should have been able to navigate the folder tree.

My workaround has been to save all new bookmarks to the root folder and then use the Bookmark Library manager (Organize Bookmarks) to organize them later. This is time consuming and I tend to forget the intended organization.

This works fine for me. Was the new profile without extensions?
Version: unspecified → 3.5 Branch
Yes. The new profile did not have any extensions except for MS .net framework assistant which installed automatically. I should have mentioned that I had removed all extensions in the past to try to fix this issue, but that did not work. This has been ongoing for about a year. I was waiting for a major upgrade before posting a bug report.
How did you create the new profile? Did you test with this new profile or you moved some file (for example places.sqlite) from the old profile to this new one?
Can you post steps to reproduce with a completely empty new profile where you "create folder A, create folder B inside A, ..."?

If you export your bookmarks in json (through the Library backup option), create a new profile (this way: http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing profiles#Creating_a_profile) and import the json file through the Library Restore option, is this still visible?
I am experiencing the same behavior.
I should add that I experienced the issue after enabling one of the following extensions:
Dust-Me Selectors 2.2
Page Speed 1.2
SortPlaces 1.6.4
SQLite Manager 0.5.1
Web Developer 1.1.8
YSlow 2.0.1

After disabling these extensions, bookmark folders collapse/expand as expected. I'll post back if I have the time to narrow down the extension that caused the problem.
sortPlaces has a scary name, i'd try with that, since looks like involved with places.

Sorry to take so long to get back. I created the new profile from the run command line: firefox.exe profilemanager . Deleted the current profile and created a new one.
The only add on was the .net assistant which comes up automatically. But, this issue occurred before .net was installed on this machine. So I do not think that is the problem. After i made the new profile, i tried to import from the json file and also tried from the html back-up. None worked. The strangest part of the behavior and possibly the key, is the fact that I can use the bookmarks with no issue for the very first bookmark of the session. As expected, I also cannot created new folders once the first bookmark "event" has been performed, e.g., creting a bookmark or new folder.

I found another work around. I am using GMarks. I am looking for a way to instantly sync the Gmarks with the Firefox bookmarks, but haven't found it.
i had this issue, but after i change the theme to the default, it went away. what themes are you guys using?
Reporter, are you still seeing this issue with Firefox 3.6.13 or later in safe mode or a fresh profile? If not, please close. These links can help you in your testing.
