Environment:
- Linux
- TB3 trunk, hg 5d5ba876db04 from 2009-10-01
- IMAP
- Inbox empty, most msgs filtered in folders and also spam-filtered (both by TB)
- Inbox selected

Actual result:
The status bar says:
"Indexing 1 of 2 messages (0% complete)"
and it doesn't progress, but stays with this message.

When I change folders (even when going back to Inbox), the message is gone.

Expected result:
- Indexing finishes within 100ms
- Message disappears (only) when indexing finishes.
Summary: Statusbar says "Indexing 1 of 2 messages (0% complete)" and stays ther → Statusbar says "Indexing 1 of 2 messages (0% complete)" and stays
This message frequently get stuck for me too.

The seems to appear every time there is new email. Is it even necessary to show this message if there's only a few new emails?

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091204 Thunderbird/3.0
What I am seeing is "Indexing 1495 of 1504 Messages (98%)" but both numbers keep changing and it never stops!

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.8) Gecko/20100216 Thunderbird/3.0.2
P.S. I'm using POP, not IMAP
I think that this bug is more general than just indexing messages. I've seen various messages get stuck in the status bar.

At this point, I'd rather just have a debug output window! The status bar in Thunderbird has been unreliable for years. It provides very little feedback when it actually works, and messes up frequently. It improved noticeably in v3, but... still not enough...
bah, can't edit comments... I am aware of the Activity Manager.
This sometimes happens to me in 3.0.4 (Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; de; rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100317 Lightning/1.0b1 Thunderbird/3.0.4).
This is fixed by bug 550648 - we don't display anything anymore in the status bar wrt to indexing.

But does hiding the activity indicator really stop the bogus indexing activity? What I saw was not just a static message that didn't clear, it was indication of ongoing activity, with the numbers constantly changing ("1495 of 1504 Messages"). It might have been a clue to wasted effort that consumes CPU resources for no good reason?
