Recapping what I mentioned IRL and IRC:

pointing to the sphinx.conf in trunk should be fine, it will execute on its own as a python script and look for a localsettings.py .  Nothing special needs to be done, other than perhaps symlinking a few things here and there.

This is live on preview. Indexed a few times, and searches are working.

How often are they cron'd on preview?

For production we'll want to time this and set cron accordingly, but I think we should be able to go back to our */5 again.
